[DANIEL RANDOLPH HUMPHREY]]i know your type,
boy, you're dangerous
yeah you're that guy i'd be stupid to trust
eighteen year old daniel randolph humphrey used to go to st jude's school for boys, so obviously he's male, but now he goes to new york university and is a literature major. because he's a literature major, occasionally he writes things for newspapers or journals, and gets things published. he's completely heterosexual, and quite into serena at the moment. his nicknames are dan, humphrey, lonely boy.
but just one night
couldn't be so wrong
you make me wanna lose control
dan is certainly not the sort of guy to be obsessed with how he looks, or to think that he’s attractive, really he’s not vain or obsessed with himself, but despite this he is a fairly attractive guy, with chiselled features, and a not bad body.
his hair is a dark brown colour, and he keeps it fairly short, not like skinhead obviously, but he’s not the sort of guy to grow his hair long, because he knows that it would be an absolute mess if he was to do that, purely because his hair is naturally fairly curly, and he feels that he would look absolutely ridiculous with it at shoulder length or something like that, plus then he feels that he would probably be fitting the stereotypical image of the distressed artist or author in his case, and it wouldn’t do to be typical. he has hazel to dark brown eyes, matching the colour of his hair, and perfectly suiting his complexion. he seems fairly tanned, compared to his paler blonder sister, but he supposes that he just takes after his father a lot more than she does, but yeah, they don’t exactly look related the majority of the time. with shaving, dan tends to shave every day because he’s realised that he looks pretty ridiculous when trying to grow a beard, he tried no shave november, but the stubble just ended with him looking like an idiot.
dan’s build is pretty normal, he’d say he’s just above average height, around six foot, and he’s probably about average weight, about one hundred and sixty pounds – he’s not really fantastic at sports, or at least he wasn’t at school so he wouldn’t really say he was that athletic, and he’s fairly lucky as despite not doing masses of exercises he doesn’t really seem to get fat. as for clothing style, dan has a fairly mixed wardrobe to pick from, but he certainly dresses for the occasion. he likes to wear his jeans and a simple v neck t shirt the majority of the time, added with a hoody, his favourite shirt has to be a blue v neck that he’s had for a long time. thing is, since getting involved with serena all that time ago, and since his father and lily married, dan has been forced to dress for more smart occasions, which has led to the necessity for suits and smart shirts, he prefers the simple black suit with white shirt and black tie, but has a fair few other shirts that he quite likes.
his playby is penn badgley.

the boys in the place
treat 'em like they don't have a chance
Dan likes writing, college, new york, his family, serena, his friends, coffee, home, being part of things, comfort, chocolate. Dan dislikes smokers, gossip girl, hierarchies, wealthy people thinking they’re better, blair waldorf, chuck bass, drugs, being made to feel he's left out because he's not from the upper east side, wealth being an obstacle, celebrities. His strenghts are that he is confident in his abilities, great writer, charming, friendly, creative. His weaknesses are that he is easily irritated, can be opinionated, stubborn, high standards, solitary.
& he got away with
the girls in the place
actin' like they're too hot to dance
dan wants more than anything in the world to be a writer, and to have a comfortable family life in the future with a girl he loves, and this is his biggest dream, but his biggest fear is also that this will not happen - it is something he has wanted for the majority of his life, and he really does not like the idea that he might lose out.
dan is definitely known for his intelligence, after all he had a scholarship to the most elite boy’s school in new york, something that was highly competitive to win. he’s definitely always been good at school work, and has constantly worked hard to keep himself up there. dan is very competitive anyway when it comes to working hard and doing well, he always wants to keep on top of his game, and be one of the best at all times, and doesnt like being beaten in intelligence. he is pretty conscientious when it comes to work, because despite having natural ability, he doesn’t like the idea of achieving something without having deserved it, and believes that to get somewhere in life you really need to work for it. he loves reading a massive amount, and his reading books as a child sparked an interest in a career in writing, possibly his greatest talent. he’s not entirely sure which road he wants to go down, whether journalist or author, but he’s certainly leading more towards author, particularly because he hates how invasive into privacy journalists have to be to get a good story published. dan feels that perhaps fiction is more his avenue because he doesn’t necessarily need to base it off of real life. included in this intelligence and talent for writing is a real creativity that dan has, he can pluck ideas out of the air, and quite easily write them down and focus them into a good story. the problem is he has such a desperation to be unique that he is always a big perfectionist for his work, and making himself different.
after he met serena all that time ago, dan’s personality basically flipped, he’d been a fairly shy, pretty lonely guy, and he’s seriously grown in confidence since that moment. confidence oozes from him now, and it’s a pretty dramatic change, he used to not want to talk to any of the upper east siders, and now he doesn’t really have any qualms with doing so. he’s definitely grown up a lot, it wasn’t that he was immature, he’s just now more able to deal with things. with this confidence, dan has become quite the charmer, he’s much better with girls, he used to stutter, and just seem like an idiot, or keep away from the girls he liked for example serena, but now he feels that he can go up and talk to them, and flirt a bit, though sometimes he still seems a bit silly when flirting. he’s also quite good at charming professors, which can be good when he needs a good mark. dan is a pretty easy going guy, someone who’s fairly easy to get along with, and he makes friends pretty easily, and is good at keeping them because he’s fairly loyal and trustworthy.
on the other side of dan’s personality is a guy who really does feel the annoyance of being from brooklyn rather than the upper east side. dan has always felt that wealth is a bit of an issue, because being from a disadvantaged background always put him on the back foot at school, and meant that it was more difficult to get a leg up on college applications since he was purely having to rely on his brains and talent, whereas the others, such as nate and blair could rely on their good connections and the people they knew at the colleges. this has made dan definitely seem like he has a chip on the shoulder when talking to people who are more wealthy than him, and can make him seem like he’s a bit stand offish with people who are more wealthy, he has certainly calmed down about this more recently, but any time he sees people using connections rather than talent, he is pretty bugged by it. alongside this dan has very high standards for other people and himself, he feels that people should uphold their morals, and be good representations of themselves, and so sometimes he can see a bit uppity and annoying. dan also has fairly strong opinions about things, such as drugs, run ins with the police, smoking and generally doing things illegally, he is a firm believer of staying on the right side of the law, and so can look down on people who are troublemakers. dan is pretty easily irritated, and has a quick temper that flares up and then cools down fast, but it’s quite easily stirred up. despite perhaps no longer seeming like “lonely boy”, dan does like his own company a bit more often than most people would, and so can seem solitary.

i know your type
you're daddy's little girl
just take a bite let me shake up your world
dan was born to parents, alison and rufus humphrey on the nineteenth of july, 1990. he was perfectly on time, and a happy, healthy baby boy to two loving parents. the humphreys were perhaps not the richest of families at this time, but they were comfortable, living in brooklyn was perfect for them, and rufus had some savings set aside at least. rufus and alison were very happy together, and happy to have a beautiful baby boy. dan was a pretty normal toddler, yelling and screaming and having all sorts of normal tantrums and he was a little spoilt to begin with being an only child, but very soon, at the age of three no less, dan was blessed with a younger sister jenny. growing up was easy in new york, dan and jenny became very close friends, and always got on well, the two played a lot together as kids, and it was easy. their childhood really definitely seemed fairly normal, and dan didn’t think anything differently. however aged fourteen, rufus encouraged dan to take entrance tests to st judes school for boys, and to his surprise he got in on full scholarship. really pleased to be giving his son a decent education, dan began attending the high school of his dreams. dan’s first two years passed pretty normally. he was looked down upon by the majority of his class mates for living in brooklyn and having no money, and definitely thought a geek by a lot of them. he was known as lonely boy, and really the term was true, dan was pretty solitary, having few friends and finding it difficult to fit in with everyone. then junior year, everything changed.
over the summer, alison humphrey moved away, she went back to hudson to continue with her art, and really, dan was unsurprised that she didn’t return, he’d noticed his mother and father losing track of each other, and the marriage beginning to fall apart. sure he was upset for his father, but he’d seen it coming. he could tell that jenny was definitely more emotional about it, and had tried to comfort her. she was starting constance billiard just as he went into junior year. this year, dan was the first to bump into serena as she returns to new york, and from here a chain of events spirals that changes dan’s life, and his position at high school completely. dan and serena end up dating, and really dan is absolutely happy, because he’s been in love with her since he was fifteen because she was nice to him at a party once. at this point, dan feels ridiculously unsure of what to do, since the two of them are from such different worlds, and he feels that he doesn’t fit in. with encouragement from serena things only get better. the couple definitely go through trials and tribulations as blair waldorf attempts to break them up many a time, dan’s feelings getting stronger and stronger for serena the entire time. dan is fairly happy because his childhood best friend returns to new york, vanessa, which makes serena jealous, despite dan saying he has nothing but platonic feelings for her. dan and serena eventually break up, because dan feels that she is holding back secrets from him.
despite his self assurance that he had done the right thing by breaking up with serena, dan found it ridiculously difficult to get over the lively blonde girl over the summer between his junior and senior year, and so he found himself moving from meaningless relationship to meaningless relationships, in half hearted attempts to stop thinking about her. dan also had a summer job, for work experience, in which he had to submit essays and stories to a professional writer, in return for a decent reference so he could attend yale university, because of his emotional attachments to serena, he missed a deadline and so unfortunately was fired. dan decided to visit the hamptons where serena was summering, in order to determine that he had done the right thing in breaking up with her. when he arrived, however, he found serena and nate in a passionate kiss, and immediately this made his blood boil, however, soon they are returning to new york together and rekindle their relationship. this works out until they have exactly the same fight as before, and end up breaking up for good, realising that the whole thing was just stupid. dan and nate begin to become friends after chuck acts stupidly towards dan, dan invites nate to live with the humphreys when he found out about nate’s financial situation. dan and serena almost get back together once again, until they find out about their mother and father’s relationship together and past history, and realise that they’d rather their parents be happy in the long term, if their relationship might only last a short time together. dan receives an acceptance letter to yale, which immediately makes him ridiculously happy, purely because he’s getting to go to the college he has always wanted to go to, he’s getting the life of his dreams, perhaps not so much with all of the issues with serena, but so much was changed by meeting her. dan soon finds attraction to another woman however, though perhaps not the most obvious girl. ms carr his literature teacher and him have lots of chemistry between them, however they cannot have a student teacher relationship. but this is soon changed, when blair acts out and ms carr ends up fired. no longer a teacher, dan sleeps with ms carr, and feels no shame for it what so ever.
however, dan’s plans for the perfect life at yale go awry, when his application for financial aid is rejected. unable to afford to go to the ivy league school, dan settles for new york university, not want to burden his dad anymore. he joins blair, georgina and vanessa here. dan dates georgina for a short time, but then realises he’s all part of some scheme of hers and leaves her, soon picking up a new relationship with olivia a movie star. dan is pleased when his father finally marries lily, because he realises his dad is finally happy, and wishes him all the best. he finds it weird that he is now part of a fairly wealthy family, and still has a bit of a chip on his shoulder about the wealth. dan and olivia break up when she is forced to return back to hollywood and her life as a movie star rather than remain a student at nyu. he begins to date his childhood friend vanessa soon after, but is dismayed when their relationship becomes a long distance one. this is difficult for dan to keep, and he ends up in bed with serena, his old flame, and realises that he’s in love with her again.
