Walking. One foot in front of the other. It was like looking back onto a life that wasn't her's as she pulled her worn out leather jacket closer to her skinny frame. She had a Batman graphic tee underneath and then some acid washed super skinny jeans and her messy converse. Manicured hands were deep in her jacket pockets as she walked along through the crowd, tugging on her onyx beanie a bit as blond locks spilled out from underneath it. She didn't look like her usual self. Instead of being decked out from head to toe in everything right off the runway, she was more conservative. It was her day to just relax and not worry about the world so with her oversized aviators in place, no paparazzi would catch her in China Town on the hunt for strawberry and chocolate Pocky, her favorite treat of all time. She didn't think the world would care anyway. It was just Pocky. Not like she was off getting drugs or something.
Weaving through the crowd in that grace of her's that she so generously inherited from her Greek mother, she made her way into the mini market place, going straight to the back aisles to get her guilty pleasure. She loved how cheap they were...perfect and always ready to go. Buying three big packs of both flavors, she was out in less than ten minutes flat with two large Pocky filled bags in tow. She was ripping one open and already munching on three strawberry sticks when she reached the corner of Canal Street and waited patiently for the light to change. There were slight flurries but nothing she couldn't handle. She just kept her jacket zipped up, her free hand in her pocket, she her feet away from puddles because everyone and their mother knew Converse in the winter were a bad idea. Silly her, she wore them because she found them so comfortable and reminded her of how she used to be...when she didn't have to pretend to be someone she wasn't in order to keep her own husband from leaving her.
Starting across the street, she smirked to herself in satisfaction. This was so worth the long trip from Manhattan. Pocky was always worth it and she had enough to last her a good three weeks because she ate it like a fiend. So until next month, this would have to do. She'd have to ration it out so it wouldn't disappear as quickly. She was so busy coming up with portions in her mind, that she didn't even notice when she made it across the street and smack into someone. Stumbling back a bit, she glanced over at the person, quickly saying, "Oh my goodness, I'm sorry!" she reached out to steady the person, hoping they were alright, "I should have been paying attention to where I was walking...Are you okay?"
The real her wouldn't have care but maybe this was the real her and the 'Zephyr' before meeting her husband was just...some crazy chick. Some other persona or other life entirely. Was it strange to get confused as to who you really were anymore? Probably...to her it was impossible.

She didn’t even know what she was doing there in the first place, there was nothing she had to do there, but she didn’t know where to go. As she kept walking down the streets of the crowded city of New York, Jessica was making time. She was bored of being at home, she had a show later than night and she had been practicing all morning. She had been working hard since she had got her job in Ricky’s and the school was getting harder and harder on her because the level was getting high, the only thing she could do was working double to not be left behind, that wasn’t going to happen to her. She needed time to relax though so she had changed herself into her round neck chunky sweater and her stretch-cotton cargo pants with some ala platform pumps and she was ready to face New York winter. She had been very young the first time she had come to New York with her adoptive parents; she couldn’t even remember how her old home was or how her old city was. She had been nine and now when she looked back she found blank spaces she couldn’t fill. But she remembered her first winter there, her mother Martha had gone all crazy and decorate all the house with lights and starts, she had been dressing her in red and green all Christmas and singing carols from morning to night.
But what she loved of those Christmas was the first time she had touched snow. She couldn’t remember if in her old town she had ever saw it, she was too young and she had suppress all those memories long ago, so for her that was a first. She had woken up that morning just like every other day but she had felt something was out of place, it was the smell of pancakes; Martha was making pancakes, which was strange because she only did them on special occasions. So Jessica had run to the kitchen and the Martha told her to look out the window. There it was, white, as if clouds had fallen from the sky and posed themselves on the streets. At first that was what she thought but then Martha had told her it was snow. When she turned James took her to change her into warm clothes and took her out to play with the snow and her mother joined them later. It had been the best day of her life, so when she looked at the snow on the street all those good memories came rushing to her. She wished she could get them back, since she had grow up she had been looking for her biological parents. Jessica didn’t want to get them back, she just only wanted to know why they had left her at the door of some stranger when she was a baby… where they hoping she would die? Or did they leave her there because they knew they would get her somewhere safe? Those were questions that bothered her, and she needed to get them out of her mind if she wanted to concentrate on what she wanted in life.
That was why she wasn’t paying attention at all where she was going, she was just trying to get back the smell of the pancakes and the warm of her memory, and she bumped into someone. She excused herself and asked her if she was alright, Jessica was so confused it took her some minutes to realize what was happening, she had been forced to come back to reality in a very bad way. No, really, my bad, I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going. I’m fine, don’t worry. She looked up to see her, Zephyr Zegna, the wife of the best designer around and one of the most famous comics writers. She had read about her in magazines and saw her on tv dozen of times, and now she was standing in front of her. She wasn’t going to allow herself to freak out, it wasn’t going to look very well and anyway, she was used to see famous people at her shows. What about you? Are you alright? She couldn’t believe she had been so clumsy as to bump into someone for not being paying attention, it could have been her crossing a road and getting smashed by a car or the other person. She shook her head and smiled at the woman trying to fix the who situation.

As the third wife of the ever famous Mr. Zegna, Zephyr had married into a family where appearances and knowing everyone and everything meant the world; having the know-how and who was who made the universe balance out between credit cards and fancy dinner parties. Zephyr, being the gal she was, never grew accustomed to such a lavished lifestyle. She was still expecting to wake up on that tiny, cramped bunk bed that was never quite long enough for her too-long legs back in poverty-filled, Yupik-country, Alaska; or on a crappy, lumpy mattress in an empty mini-apartment in Queens with Mr. Zegna as her secret agent lover man sprawled next to her in his birthday suit with her drawings of superheros and villains sketched into his skin with cheap magic marker. In most magazines, when they asked her why she wasn't just a full time model since the pay was so much better than being a comic book artist, she would simply tell them the truth: looks could only last forever and once you had a passion for something, you simply couldn't let it go. Drawing imaginary creatures, superheros, villains, animals, landscapes...they helped her deal with her angst filled teen years where racism literally devoured her whole, chewed her up, then spat her back out into the Alaskan tundra over and over again every single damn day of her life. She wasn't welcome because she was white, had blond hair, and blue eyes. She wasn't welcome because they saw her as a bad omen. Different.
Marrying Mr. Zegna was like history repeating itself. She didn't belong with the upper class. She belonged where she started off; living pay check to paycheck, doodling tourists for extra cash, living for herself and no one else. She was a dangerous person, or she used to be. Now she was watered down and just like any other socialite who ever graced this island. She was a fake and she knew it all too well. Lifting her sunglasses so she could see the person better, she easily dumped them in her grocery bag full of Pocky, "Nah, I'm good," she spoke freely, instinctively believing she wouldn't be recognized. In interviews, she always spoke so clearly and her grammar was always impeccable but she figured, hey, she wasn't all that famous...right? But she bit her lower lip and corrected herself anyway, "I mean, I'm doing well. Thank you for asking," who knew? Maybe the gal did recognize her. Better to correct herself and stay on the safe side, "But you should be careful, uhm..." she frowned slightly considering she didn't know her name but then continued, "...you were about to walk into the street and we all know the taxis in this city are a bit relentless."
Which was an understatement. She remembered when she first arrived in the city when she was seventeen and the first thing that happened was that she got hit by a taxi. Considering she had no insurance, she simply popped her arm back into place, all too used to such pain and putting up a tough front for herself, and then wore a make-shift sling until she felt it was totally healed; using whatever drugs she could get her hands on to numb the pain. Thankfully she was ambidextrous. No drawing would have totally destroyed her.

As much as she tried, Jessica could barely remember something about her childhood, she had so much blank spots. She could remember the orphanage, the kids around her, always playing games.... She remembered she was happy, and that she felt comfortable there, and one day that strange couple came and requested to see her. They were old, not the normal age of a couple who will adopt a girl her age but they were so good and kind that no one questioned their decision. They spend some moths visiting her in the orphan, giving her toys and treating her like their own child, one day Mrs. Jefferson told her they were going to adopt her and take her with them to a new place, a home. Since then her life was different, new place, new parents, new people around her, she had been so confused and scared, but Martha had always been there for her and after a while she just felt they were her family. The first time she arrived there everything was so different to her peaceful country orphanage, it was full of people, noise, cars, all of that was confusing, but she was only a child and got used to the life of New York. Oh thanks, I know, sorry, I was just so self-absorbed. When she went to school for the first time… she was so nervous, she didn’t know if she was going to fit there, and she had some problems of course, but apart from that she did it quite well to fit in.
I was thinking about… well I was thinking and didn’t even realize where I was going. She was talking to someone famous, someone from the Upper East Side, someone important but for some reason she just couldn’t care less, she seemed normal, she knew they were normal, of course, but when she saw them walking by the street, all dressed up and amazing she always thought they were from another planet. Of course, that could be because she was just a middle class girl trying to be like her heroines of Chicago film. I’ll be more careful next time, I’m really sorry. With the Jessica started to walk again, but as she started her mind went again to her memories of her childhood, the smell of hot chocolate the Christmas morning, the dinner with all the family, the present under the Christmas tree… Her first Christmas in New York were amazing, she had just a wonderful time and so much presents! All the family wanted to give her something, all of them tried to have her happy and comfortable so all of them bought a lot of presents. Now things weren’t different, she helped Martha to make cookies and Christmas dinner, she helped James with the Christmas presents.
What she liked the most about Christmas, were the lights on the streets, the Christmas tree and the sudden happiness everyone experimented. Families got together, spent time together and were happy, took the children to play with the snow and bought them toys and decorate their homes with lights and candles and the smell of sweets and pancakes and everything was everywhere. Though it was a sad time too, she was with family, but it was not her family, she couldn’t stop thinking about it, she had been looking for them and wondered if they would be thinking of her too, or maybe they didn’t care of her and weren’t thinking of her. Martha and James had done everything for her but she couldn’t tell them she was looking for her biological parents because they would be sad and disappointed. But she missed some family she didn’t remember, she missed something she never had, her childhood had been spent in an orphanage, surrounded by good people, of course, but not the best place to spend her younger years.
