-- beautiful british columbia.
welcome to beautiful british columbia! trail, to be specific. trail is a small town on the banks of
the columbia river, which is in the west kootenay region of bc... home to over seven thousand
people, this town offers stunning natural surroundings, as well as outstanding opportunities for
living life to the fullest... except that lately, people haven't exactly been able to live life to the
fullest in trail. it's a town. people die. that's normal. people are born, they grow up, and then
they die... right? of course. but in trail, they've been coming back. not normal.
-- the originals.
on a hot night in the middle of august 2010, there was a party. a victorian-style mansion which
belonged to the turners. the guy throwing the party was matthew turner, a senior at the single
high school in trail. anyone between the ages of fourteen and nineteen showed up. mr turner, a
slightly scatterbrained man, worked for the federal government. they'd been working on a virus
to use in the event of a war, but it wasn't quite perfected yet. the lab in the basement was full,
so being the scatterbrained man he was, mr turner put the half-formed disease in the freezer in
the garage. not a good plan. the virus had previously been frozen into a large block of ice. this
was in order to prevent his "knucklehead" of an eighteen-year-old son from stumbling across it
and setting it loose -- of course, this was what ended up happening... unfortunately, one of the
containment chambers had a small crack in it, and small traces of the contents leaked into the
surrounding water before it had completely frozen. the turners went away for the weekend, and
matt, the quarterback on the football team, decided to throw a party. of course, being as hot as
it was, people would need ice for their drinks. and a supposedly-resourceful matt went out into
the garage and chopped up an ice block from the freezer with an axe that was normally used to
chop firewood. once the party-goers had the tiny amounts of the virus in their systems, it could
either be flushed out after a couple of hours and a nasty hangover, or, if they died, the dormant
virus would recognize their weakened immune system and attack at the center of their nervous
system, jump-starting the body and returning them to a state of half-living... remember, it was
only partially formed, nowhere near ready for use in a possible war.
-- transition.
blaire constance, the mayor's daughter, was somewhat of a party girl, beginning at the age of
thirteen. she was the most popular girl in the twelfth grade. and not the type of popular where
everybody secretly hated her; the type of popular where everyone genuinely liked her. despite
the fact that it was relatively easy to get into her pants, most girls at hutchinson high thought
blaire was a fun person to be around with a good heart. she attended matthew's party with her
boyfriend of a year and a half, donny. nobody wanted to be the unlucky one to tell him that his
girlfriend had been cheating on him the whole time with half of the football team. he was kinda
scary. he could beat up practically anyone that pissed him off. donny wasn't exactly the most...
caring of boyfriends. this was proven when his girlfriend died of alcohol poisoning while the two
of them were on the way back to his house -- he dumped her in a ditch on the side of the road.
he thought that she would never open her eyes again. when she did, she was in a meadow. the
flowers were brightly colored and the tall grass tickled her ankles. much too happy, she thought
as she looked around. and then this girl came out into the open, out of the trees at the edge of
the meadow. she didn't have a face. or, if she did, blaire couldn't see it. the one thing she does
remember about the girl's appearance is that she had wings.
-- the scary part.
the worst part about this virus was that it was contagious. passed along by the originals -- five
people who who died that first night; blaire constance, persephone bender, matthew turner, tim
cassidy, and ellen loftus -- by the coughing up of blood with in the first week or so. it was very
similar to a cold, only with a lot more gory details. anyone who caught the virus started to die.
in very normal ways to die, too. old age, sickness, car crashes, vitamin b deficiencies... the list
of possibilities was endless. and these people began to come back, too. but they weren't quite
so normal as the original ice-cube-infected five. as the virus passed into each new body, it was
mutating, causing the victims to become more and more violent, more and more thoughtless...
the originals were pretty much as normal as your ordinary person, except for the general pale-
ness, glazed-over eyes, and lack of a pulse. as the disease was passed along, each generation
of "deadies," as blaire constance dubbed herself, would be more prone to scratching and biting,
which would also lead to transmission of the disease.
-- leave this town.
it wasn't as if people didn't try to avoid it. little kids having play dates was practically ruled out
as an option, and there's talk of the elementary school, middle school and high school all being
shut down soon. of course, teenagers being teenagers, they sneak out to go and see all of their
friends, or their boyfriends or girlfriends and things like that. it's still spreading. new citizens of
trail die each day. tourists passing through, they die. people coming to visit family, they die, as
well. cats and dogs and other animals don't seem to get whatever it is. the federal government
doesn't seem to be doing a thing to stop it; the provincial government is following suit. people
are starting to wonder if the canadian government has it in for trail, bc. escaping doesn't do a
bit of good; once you escape, you're no longer "contagious" because of the lack of exposure to
other people, but you'll probably still die anyhow. all of the deaths are being ruled out as what
they appear to be -- dying of old age, of illness. people die in car crashes and accidents around
the work place and falling off of high places and all the things that people normally die of. only
the people of trail know the truth, and they've realized that it really is time to leave this town
